New York State Quality Improvement Program for Traumatic Brain Injury

The New York State Quality Improvement (QI) Program for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the first ever internet-based program for evaluating the acute care of TBI patients from the scene through the first two weeks post-injury in selected New York State Trauma Centers. It is a model comprehensive quality improvement program designed to achieve improved outcomes for severe TBI patients through targeted education coupled with database entry of TBI patients, assessment of the current level of care, and systems-based quality improvement strategies to improve TBI care.

The QI Program has demonstrated marked improvements in severe TBI care and has generated important data documenting the need for evidence-based practice. Since program implementation in 2000, the incidence of intracranial pressure monitoring has risen steadily while steroid administration and prophylactic hyperventilation have seen a progressive decline. Trauma centers are using the data obtained from the QI Program to identify areas for improvement and prepare scientific manuscripts for medical journals.

The New York State QI Program is funded through the New York State Department of Health, New York State Senate Health Committee, and the New York State Office of HealthCare Financing. The QI Program offers financial incentives to trauma centers participating in the program.

As of 2006, the program is active in 18 New York State Trauma Centers:

Albany Medical Center
Jacobi Medical Center
Bellevue Hospital Center
Jamaica Hospital
New York Presbyterian Hospital
Erie County Medical Center
North Shore University Hospital
University Hospital Stony Brook

National Quality Improvement Initiative

The Brain Trauma Foundation is also partnering with the Mission Innovation Institute at Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo, CA to bring the best TBI care to trauma centers throughout the U.S.

The Adam Williams TBI Initiative, administered by Mission Hospital, is a nationally acclaimed program focusing on educational outreach and continued research on improving TBI patient care. Trauma centers selected to take part in the Initiative receive assistance with adopting BTF’s Guidelines for the Management of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury and integrating brain oxygen monitoring as standard clinical management of TBI patients. The selected trauma centers are also part of BTF’s National Quality Improvement (NQI) Initiative which provides medical personnel with real-time reports summarizing their TBI care from data entered through an internet-based database.

The centers currently enrolled are:

Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo, CA
Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, PA
Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, OH
Christiana Hospital, Newark, DE
Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo, MI
Queens Medical Center, Honolulu, HI
Borgess Medical Center; Kalamazoo, MI
St. Mary Corwin Medical Center, Pueblo, CO
