About BTFLearning.orgAbout BTF
About BTFThe Brain Trauma Foundation (BTF) is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the outcome of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients through guideline development, education, quality improvement programs, and clinical research. TBI is the leading cause of death and disability in children and adults ages 1 to 44. An estimated 1.4 million TBIs occur every year in the United States, and of those approximately 50,000 result in death, with 80,000 to 90,000 left with permanent disability. Research has proven that not all brain damage occurs at the moment of impact, but rather evolves over the ensuing hours and days after the initial injury due to brain swelling. In most cases, this secondary damage can be controlled when scientific, evidence-based care is provided. With the assistance of internationally recognized neurosurgical experts, BTF developed the first scientific evidence-based guidelines and protocols for treating severe TBI. These Guidelines are proven to help control secondary brain damage and increase the chances for victims to not only survive but to return to a normal life. The implementation of BTF Guidelines has been shown to decrease mortality, improve outcomes, reduce days in the ICU, hospital, and rehabilitation, and reduce costs. By educating healthcare professionals to use these Guidelines, thousands of lives could be saved each year in the U.S., and many more would be spared lifelong disabilities. BTF has worked closely with the following organizations which helped to develop the Guidelines and also approved or endorsed them: American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Neurotrauma and Critical Care AANS/CNS Joint Section, Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) Committee on Neurotrauma. BTF provides a wide range of online continuing education activities to assist all levels of healthcare professionals in the management of traumatic brain injury (TBI). PurposeThis website provides access to online continuing education activities that aim to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals in all aspects of TBI, from the scene of injury through the emergency room and intensive care unit to recovery. Based on the latest scientific evidence-based Guidelines by BTF, our online activities are expected to improve the quality of care provided to TBI patients, thereby reducing mortality and morbidity from TBI. Target AudienceThe target audience for our online activities include: prehospital professionals, neurosurgeons, critical care nurses, neuroscience nurses, nurse educators, researchers, and others interested or involved in the management of patients who have suffered TBI.
